Party food questions, answered

Portions, budgets, dietary planning, make-ahead strategy — the questions every party host asks.

What is a party food idea generator? +

A party food idea generator is a brainstorming tool that suggests dish names and descriptions for your event menu. FeastFable's generator lets you filter by course — appetizers, dips, finger foods, main bites, desserts, drinks — plus dietary fit and style, then produces a random list you can copy or download. It is designed for menu inspiration, not recipes.

How many appetizers do I need for 20 guests? +

For a standalone appetizer party of 2–3 hours, plan 6–8 bites per person — for 20 guests that is roughly 120–160 pieces total. If dinner follows, 3–4 bites per person is plenty. Mix heavy and light options, and lean on the make-ahead filter in the generator so you are not cooking while guests arrive.

What are the best cheap party foods? +

The cheapest party foods are carb-and-dip based: popcorn, tortilla chips with queso or seven-layer dip, pasta cups, rice-based dishes, homemade pizza bites, and big-batch punches. Buying in bulk and choosing make-ahead dishes keeps costs down. Our budget guide breaks down the cheapest crowd heroes by category.

How do I plan party food for vegetarians and vegans? +

Start by generating vegetarian or vegan ideas with the dietary filter, then build at least one substantial anchor dish (not just side salads) for each diet. Dips with crudites, falafel bites, seven-layer dip, loaded nacho platters and fruit skewers all travel well across diets. Always confirm allergies directly with guests — filters are a guide, not a guarantee.

What finger foods are easiest to make ahead? +

Dips (hummus, spinach artichoke, pimento cheese), meatballs, empanadas, quiche bites, brownie bites, cheese straws and most desserts hold beautifully. Assemble the day before, refrigerate, and reheat or serve cold on party day. The generator's Make-ahead style filter surfaces these automatically.

How far in advance should I plan a party menu? +

For a casual party, finalizing the menu 3–5 days ahead gives you time to shop once and prep in stages. For 30+ guests or a themed party, give yourself 1–2 weeks. Day-before prep should cover everything that can be made ahead; party day is for reheating, assembling and drinks.

Can I download my generated menu? +

Yes. After generating, click Download .txt to save your idea list as a plain text file, or Copy all to paste it into your notes, shopping list or group chat. Everything happens in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere.

Is FeastFable really free? +

Yes — unlimited generations, no account, no email signup, no paywall. The tool is plain JavaScript running on your device, using crypto.getRandomValues for randomness.
